Standing Alone by Chase

Standing Alone by Chase
I can see the flower upon which my life grows, blooming into a rose.

See the hope and courage in the strength of the petals.
As long as I am, I will be.
The flower will never wilt or die.
As my life grows back, I shall become strong.
I shall become only dependent on one.
That one will be me.
I will rise with my petals high.
My life as a flower will bloom and prosper as I grow.
I may not be the pick of the patch, but I am just as beautiful as the rest.

I will stand as one, but not a lonely soul.
The tears will be far from my smile.

Analysis:
Sense – I thought the poem would be about loneliness since the ‘alone’ is used in the title, but the poem ‘Standing Alone’ by Chase is rather about the poet’s decision. However, this is the minor theme of the poem. The poet wanted to convey that everyone is special as he describes himself one of roses in the patch.

Intention – The poem is intended to convey the major theme of each one has their own of us is special and unique. Most of the lines describe the poet himself, but the tenth line mentions about groups of people and reveals the major theme.

Feeling
– When I first read the poem, I envied the poet a little. The most important theme of the poem is that everyone is unique, but it also describes the poet’s decision of becoming stronger and independent. I believe the poet is very sturdy, so I was a little shameful of myself who is timid.

Tone – The overall tone can be changed upon how the last line is interpreted. If we interpret it positively, this line would mean that he will not give up, but on the other hand, this can be interpreted as the poet pretend to be strong under pressure. However, the lines come before the last are filled with courageous tone, so the tone of the poem would be courageous and fearless.

Style/Symbol - The poet used ‘a blooming rose’ as symbol, and it symbolizes the poet, and the patch of a rose symbolize groups of people. The poet uses some facts about a rose to convey both major and minor themes of the poem.
First, the poem mentions the petals of the hope and courage petals and this resembles the poet’s inner change. He means the he has become hopeful and courageous (since he describes himself as a ‘blooming’ rose). Furthermore, a thin stem and thorn are used to describe his decision though they are never mentioned in the poem. The stem would represent the emotional weakness the poet had and the thorn would represent the decision of being stronger and independent, and this is revealed in the line five and six.
The line 10 says, ‘I may not be the pick of the patch, but I am just as beautiful as the rest.’ It use the fact of that a rose loses its beauty when there are bunch of roses but it is still considered to be beautiful. At this point, the poet conveys the major theme of everybody is special. He describes a group of people as a group of roses.
The poet uses metaphor in the first line (describing himself as a rose) and personification in the second line (a rose has courage and hope), but he uses it to clarify what a rose symbolizes so the major theme would be conveyed more easily.

Emotion – This poem evokes courage and hope (though they may no be considered as emotion). The poet uses phrases such as ‘I will rise’ and ‘will never die.’ This gives strong tone and evokes courage and hope.

Imagery –The poem gives us the image of a rose garden if we understand what a rose symbolizes in this poem, but it has not described thoroughly. If we do not understand the symbol, the poem does not convey well, so I believe the poem does not use imagery. have not described it thoroughly, so I believe the poem has not used imageries.

One Inch Tall by Shel Silverstein

One Inch Tall

If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school.
The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool.
A crumb of cake would be a feast
And last you seven days at least,
A flea would be a frightening beast
If you were one inch tall.

If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door,
And it would take about a month to get down to the store.
A bit of fluff would be your bed,
You'd swing upon a spider's thread,
And wear a thimble on your head
If you were one inch tall.

You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum.
You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb.
You'd run from people's feet in fright,
To move a pen would take all night,
(This poem took fourteen years to write--'
Cause I'm just one inch tall).

T-title: the title of the poem is ‘One Inch Tall.’ All we can predict from the title is that poet would describe the life of a one-inch-tall man, so the poem will not have much deep meaning.

P-paraphrase: As it can be predicted from the title, the poem treats about what would happen if a man is one inch tall. The poet, Shel Silverstein, describes humorous experience and the difficulties an one-inch-tall man would face. However, at the end, he changed the topic to himself; he says it took 14 years to write down the poem because he is one inch tall.

C-connotation: motif and metaphor – ‘one-inch-tall’ is used twice in each stanzas and it
used as metaphor to describe the poets mental.
Rhyme scheme – In the pattern of ‘aabbbc ddeeec ffggg’ the poet used rhymes.

A-attitude: The poem is very cheerful and playful at the beginning, but the tone of the poem changes into rather grave tone at the end because of the change in the topic.

S-shift: The shift of the poem is the last two lines of the last stanza because of the change in the topic. As I said, he describes the life of an one-inch-tall man, but the at the end, he says how long it took to write down the poem and why. These two lines, or the shift, reveal the true meaning of ‘one inch tall.’ He describes himself as if he is one inch tall to show that his weakness and unsophistication though he is an adult. These lines give the sense of advice to be aware of our weakness.

T-title: ‘One-inch-tall’ is the motif used in the poem, so it would be good to name the poem after the motif. However, this phrase implies another meaning; it is an metaphor that describes the poet’s weakness, which is the true purpose of writing this poem. Therefore, ‘One Inch Tall’ is more descriptive than any other poems.

T-theme: I think it has two theme. One is a one-inch-tall person's life, but this is merely superficial one. I belive the true theme is the confession of the weakness and the acceptance of that a man has weakness because the poet describes himself as a weak person.

One Art by Elizabeth Bishop

One Art

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

--Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

The poem One Art by Elizabeth Bishop describes about the losing ‘precious objects’ such as mother’s watch in the poem, and ‘memories’ about where you lived or what you have done before. When we lose something, we are in pain as it is a disaster, but the author has different thought on ‘losing.’ By using ‘The art of losing isn’t hard to master,’ he implies that losing is one part of life; human life is great art, and so losing is art since it is the part of art. In other word, he says even we lose precious memories such loved ones, we have to accept the lost as part of life.
This poem is quite concise. Many poems have different meaning behind the words, but it was easy to understand the poem (though I am not sure if I am correct). That is not why I like this poem; this poem personally speaks to me. I am forgetful, so I have lost many things, but this poem says we need to accept the lost and this cheers me up.

(I can't find any good pictures for this..-_-;;)
